origin of swords


Swords were some of the first basic weapons of ancient and medieval warfare. They were considered badges of honor and symbols of distinction. Swords were first made from copper which dulled quickly, then then they were made from bronze ( which is copper and tin combined together ) and which suited their needs better. Then iron was discovered, but though it was easy to work with it didn't hold an edge. More than 2000 years ago somewhere in the 5th century BC when swords called Falcata which were made by
the Celt-Iberians of Roman times.They were justly famed for their one of the most devastating swords ever made! The inward curving blade delivers a tremendous blow and could split both shield and helmet. Considered to be of Greek, or possibly Etruscan origin, this sword spread into Southern Russia and also Spain. It was in Spanish hands that it was most feared by the RomansThe earlier swords hacked as much as they cut.
Then steel was discovered, and history was made.
Two Hand Claymore
The remains of this massive Scottish war sword are housed in London's renowned British Museum. The furniture is brass, as with many Highland weapons, to prevent rust in the chronically wet mountain climate. This type of sword would have been carried to the great battlefields where the Scots struggled against their most bitter enemy, the English. In the hands of a brawny highland warrior this would have been a devastating weapon.
The Sword Of Oran
In 1509, during the reign of Ferdinand V of Castile and Aragon, the Spanish War against the Moors was carried out of Spain and across the Mediterranean. Under the command of Pedro Navabro, they landed in present day Algeria near Oran. The Spaniards quickly seized the heights overlooking the city. From this position, using their pikes, they scaled the walls of the city and stormed into Oran. The Moslems were no match for the deadly sword-and-buckler style of fighting of the Spanish infantry and thousands of Moors were either killed or captured. The forces went on to take Tripoli the following year and the Moslem rulers were obliged to pay tribute to the Spanish crown. This early backsword is one of the forms favored by these sword-and-buckler troops that many consider the finest infantry in Europe during the era
The most famous steel sword still known today is Toledo Steel. The Origin comes from the ancient Spanish customs. Today in the world few swords are still used for battle. Some swords are symbolic and used in ceremonies, though most go home with Collectors. Collectors enjoy looking for craftsman ship and intricate detailing on the handle and blade of the sword. The scabbard can also be very decorative. Swords come in all shapes and sizes and from very different ethnic backgrounds. A sword collector can make his or her display a focal point of any room they are displayed in. Swords come in all shapes, sizes, detailing and price ranges.
